Understanding MS

What is Multiple Sclerosis (MS)?

Multiple Sclerosis is a chronic autoimmune disease that impacts the brain, spinal cord and optic nerves, which make up the central nervous system (CNS) and control everything we do. It occurs when the immune system mistakenly attacks the protective covering of nerve fibers (myelin), leading to communication problems between the brain and the rest of the body.

The exact cause of MS is unknown, but we do know that something triggers the immune system to attack the CNS. This interruption of communication signals causes unpredictable symptoms such as mood changes, memory problems, pain, and paralysis.

Symptoms may come and go, or they can progress over time. These effects may be temporary or long lasting.

What can I do to manage my MS symptoms and live a better life with MS?
Managing MS involves a multifaceted approach. Working closely with healthcare professionals, such as neurologists and physical therapists, is essential.
